CLEARING OUT OUR ARCHIVES!
A superb and rare image of the
Gus Kuhn
BMW R 90 S Daytona
, photographed in the paddock of the 1975
Bol
d’Or
endurance race which was held on the circuit of
Le Mans
in
Northern France
in 1975.
This machine came from the famous Gus Kuhn Racing Team. It was fitted with open belmouth
38 mm
Dell’Orto
carburetors. The bike was lightened extensively, it weighed
396 pounds
(
180 kg
), which was quite a difference compared to the stock
425 pounds
(
205 kg
) that the stock R90S weighed. To gain more ground clearance for cornering, the engine was raised
30 mm
(
1.18”
) in the chassis. In mild endurance tuning trim, the
Gus
Kuhn
BMW R 90S delivered a power output of 84 bhp.
The magnificent BMW R 90 S Daytona is one of the famous most Superbikes of the seventies.
They were very strong contenders in the large capacity long distance racing classes, as their reliability was a strong point. The BMW R 90 S Daytona was often used in production based racing on both sides of the
Atlantic
. In the early 1970’s, long distance racing was extremely popular in Europe and the
U.S.A.
These events were responsible for the quick gaining popularity of the heavier sports motorcycle, like the Ducati 750 SS, the Moto Guzzi V7 Sport, the Benelli 650 Tornado, the BMW R 90 S Daytona and the Laverda SFC 750; but also the Japanese sports motorcycles like the Kawasaki 350, 500 and 750 triples and of course the Honda CB 750 Four. Riders that would make world fame, like
Franco
Uncini
and
Marco
Lucchinelli
, all participated in these races before they made the steps to the Grand Prix World Championship racing scene.
This is your rare chance to own an image that reflects a very interesting piece of BMW’s glorious history. Therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 7.9" x 11.2" (ca.
20 x 28
.5 cm).
