Leopoldo Tartarini
on the magnificent
Ducati 100 Gran Sport , or Marianna .
during the
1955 edition of the Giro d’Italia
long distance race.
It is a great image of both Tartarini and the Ducati 100 Gran Sport during the 3
rd
edition of the Giro d’Italia or “Round of Italy”. The new Ducati was designed by Fabio Taglioni , Dr. T. , and was soon nicknamed the Marianna. The new Ducati stood on a base of a long line of Ducati singles, and even the V-twins were partly based on it. The new Gran Sport debuted during t
he extremely heavy Giro d’Italia roadrace ran in a huge circle around
Italy
. The roadrace lasted 9 days, during which a distance of about
2,175 miles
(
3,500 km
) (!) were covered! The riders had to cross mountain passes, coastal roads, short curves, long curves, and road surfaces that were barely rideable at stretches.
It was a fantastic debut of the Gran Sport, as the first 6 places were taken by the new machine. Winner Gianni Degli Antoni had won the race with an average speed of
61.45 mph
(
98.9 km/h
), placing him even 5
th
overall! The Marianna also won
Milan
-
Taranto
in the same year.
On the photo we see Leopoldo Tartarini on his Marianna. He later would design the 1973 Ducati desmo single and the Ducati 900 SD Darmah production bikes.
