A superb and rare photo. Shown is the absolutely amazing
Evel Knievel
with his famous
650cc Triumph Bonneville TT Special Sky Cycle
.
This machine was as rare and special as the stunts that Evel performed with it.
It was heavily tuned and immaculately prepared by both the Triumph factory before it left the factory as by Evel Knievel’s crew.
Evel rode and jumped on Triumph earlier on in his career. The 650cc parallel twin Bonneville TT Special developed a power output of 46 hp at 6,500 r.p.m. The topspeed was over
109 mph
. The TT Special was a very rare, high performance version of the Bonneville. It was modified to suit Evel´s jumping needs, note the brake parachute on the back.
Also noticeable on the photo, is the rocket mounted on the RH side of the bike. Two rockets were mounted on the Triumph. They are responsible for the machine’s “Sky Cycle” name! Evel had intentions to jump over the
Grand Canyon
. He mounted fully functional rockets to the motorcycle in order to finish the jump successfully. The photo shows the first version of his amazing Sky Cycle.
Evel made incredible jumps, totally not comparable with the jumps todays stuntmasters make on bikes that weigh halve the weight, accelerate much faster and have 6 times more suspension travel then Evel’s Triumph!
