A superb and rare photo of the
1938 Harley-Davidson factory sidecar.
In 1936 H-D introduced the 61 c.i. (1,000cc) OHV Knucklehead model series. Its massive V-twin overhead valve HD engine performed remarkably well.
Together with the new Knucklehead a new, more modern styling was introduced on the big Harley models.
That styling also made its way that same year to the Harley sidecars.
Up until today sidecars were made as an accessory in the Harley-Davidson factory.
Basically the styling of these sidecars remained did not change between 1936 and 1969!
This photograph shows the 1938 sidecar, attached to a Knucklehead model.
The negative dates from 1938, it was made from a large retouched model photograph.
Like many other automotive factories, Harley used to retouch original photos to make the bike look as smart as possible, deleting clutter and loose cables to give a nice pristine image of the motorcycle.
In the case of this sidecar photo, a nice background also was added by the artist that had this great, precise yet difficult job.
The result is a photograph that looks as historic as it does gorgeous!
