    Description

A superb and rare photo of the famous
    Laverda
    100
    in
    long distance roadracing guise in
    1958
    .
The Laverda 100 was derived from the famous 75cc model. That machine featured a 75cc ohv engine. It first appeared in
    1948. In
1951 it appeared as a factory prepared racing machine in
    Milan
    -
    Taranto
but had to retire. However factory boss Francesco Laverda was prepared to give it another go in 1952. With success, as it won with might the 75cc class! The 100cc version featured a 98cc ohv engine that had a bore and stroke of 52 x
    42 mm
. Like its smaller brother, it was extremely successful in long distance racing events, especially the immensely popular
    Milan
    -
    Taranto
    roadrace.
The extremely heavy Milano-Taranto (or MiTa) roadrace ran from the North to the South of Italy, a length of circa
    800 miles
    (1,300 km’s), starting was at
    midnight
    in the city of
    Milan
, the finish at the city of
    Taranto
. The riders had to cross mountain passes, coastal roads, short curves, long curves, and road surfaces that were barely rideable at stretches.
In 1954 Larquier won with a similar Laverda 100 as photographed the 100cc class of the race. He needed a time of 15 hours, 26 minutes and 11 seconds to cover the distance, good for terrific average speed of
    51.886 mph
    (
    83.503 km/h
    )! In
    1954 a
total of 13 riders started in the 100cc class. Of them 9 rode Laverda’s.
    In the
    USA
, Laverda was also marketed under the American Eagle name.
This is your rare chance to own this photo that reflects a very interesting and highly historic piece of both Laverda and Milano Taranto’s legendary history. Therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 8" x 12" (ca. 20 x 30 cm).
