    Description

Primitive Folk Art Painting by Robert L. Merriam, painted between 2004-2010.
An original painting by western Massachusetts primitive folk artist Robert L. Merriam (1924-2014).
Born in Greenfield, Massachusetts on June 4, 1924, Merriam
graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1943, served in the Navy during WWII, graduated Dartmouth
in 1948, where he was the only four-year, three letter athlete in the college's history. He returned to Deerfield Academy and for 22 years served as an educator, coach and administrator.
In 1970, he became Headmaster of Stoneleigh-Burnham School in Greenfield, making significant contributions to the school in the expansion of enrollment and endowment, before retiring in 1988.
He started a Rare, Used, and Old Book business in 1969 and engaged in business with customers worldwide. He was a published author and one of his poems can be found inscribed on a plaque at the north entrance to Old Deerfield, Mass.
Merriam gained wider renown as a folk art painter later in his life, painting scenes from the hilltowns of western Massachusetts, and frequently including the figure of a man clad in black, as featured here.
The condition of the painting is excellent. Any incompletely painted sections on the black frame are the result of Merriam's technique.
