Description
A superb and rare photo of the famousTriumph 650cc World Record Breaker that broke the land speed record in September 1955 to a new world record speed of
192.3 mph
(307.68 km/hr)!
The photo was taken at the famous
Bonneville Salt Flats
shortly after the attempt.
On the photo we see driver
Johnny Allen
touching the front of the record breaker, that was nicknamed “Devil’s Arrow” and was also known as the “Texas Cigar”. Allen was 27 years old when he broke the record, and was already a veteran Texas Short Track Champion.
The engine, located behind the driver, was a thoroughly tuned 650cc Triumph standing twin cylinder engine that originally came from a Daytona. It had the same layout as the Tiger 100, Speed Twin and off course the later Bonneville !!!!! The
Meriden
twin was obviously capable of magical performances, but that was nothing new! Jack Wilson tuned the engine, he stands third from left, also touching the world record breaker.
This impressive machine was designed by J.H. Mangham. The triumph engine was build in a long and sleek Chrome Moly chassis, that was covered by a slim, aerodynamic body that was 15ft
8”
long and
22.5”
wide.
Mangham and Wilson did an impressive job, making it possible that an incredibly high speed of
192.3 mph
(307.68 km/hr) could be obtained!
This is a very nice and very rare
non period
photo that reflects a wonderful and very historic era of Triumph motorcycle history in a wonderful way. This is your rare chance to own this photo, therefore it is printed in a nice large format of ca. 9.76" x 7.56" (ca. 24.
8 x 19
.2 cm). It makes it perfectly suitable for framing!
