East Arlington, Vermont, 20th Century raised feather carving. This brightly colored bird has a red, orange, and bright yellow body with black wings and tail. It is 6" tall, 7" long, and 6" wide perched on a polished branch. The carving is signed "Western Tanager by P. Zeller."
Phillip Zeller was very familiar with the shores of Cape Cod, akin to master carver A. Elmer Crowell. Zeller exhibited for several years at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum's annual Birds in Art Exhibit in Wausau, Wisconsin. His entry from 1979, a kingfisher, was selected for the Smithsonian Institution in 1980.
